Okay, I could've given this place a low rating for one of two reasons. I could be trying to keep this place a secret by scaring potential visitors away. Or, I could be truthful and trying to warn potential visitors to go somewhere else. You be the judge. If you're like me, a semi-young, business professional who works in the area, and you're looking for a drink, this is NOT the place you want to go. Sure, there are limited options in the area. To be honest, I think I'd rather just be sober than go here. It has an unsafe feel to it. It's a remnant of what SSF used to be. It's filled with older locals, who seem scruffy. They only have bottled beers. Let the locals, who see their area changing to cater to the new bio-tech companies, have this place to themselves. Avoid it, do the scary locals have a sanctuary, and check out The Standby or Hometown Heroes.

5 Stars! I want to give a shout out to little boy Alex B. down there in the comments section. I found his review "useful". He stated "if you are a loser than this is the place for you." Instantly, my boyfriend and I thought, we have to come check this place out. We are from LA and were visiting SF, looking for a good time.
I have got to say, what a GREAT time we had here :) The bartender (older man) took our order, 2 bottled beers, 2 tequila shots, and we were blown away by their cheap prices. We sat in their little sports corner where they had baseball seats and memorabilia etc. It made us feel like we were in someones home. The bartender kept coming by checking in if we were ok on drinks, and we continued to order more and he was just so friendly! We watched some baseball on their tv there.
I loved the old cash register they had, it was such a lovely antique.
I have to say, if you are douchey and want a "modern hip" spot with "obnoxious drunks" then this is not the place for you. If you can appreciate a nice place, cheap drinks, & great service, then check this place out. If we are ever back in SF, we will def. be coming back here. THANK YOU!

Great dive bar. CASH only, but they pass on the discount--this bar is about the patrons. Sports TVs and good music jukebox. Small and friendly.

I loved the Topper. It's very cozy and the regulars are friendly. It's located on a cozy street near the airport and the drinks are affordable. Big city surprise!

I have passed by this bar twice a day everyday for the last five years. It wasn't until New Years Day that I decided to step in & have a beer because I wanted to get out of the house and guess what-they were open!
I was in for the most pleasant surprise! I always new that this was a long time local spot, giving me predispositions about what to expect when inside. But the place was inviting, friendly, and full of sports history and memorabilia! I, being a huge sports girl myself and root for all my local teams, had a huge appreciation for this place as I sat in what was decorated to be a mock mancave in a bar. Super cute.
The bartender was friendly and after a little conversation with him, appreciated his pride in being there. The establishment has been there for 76 years, and with new developments being built on Grand Ave, I hope to see it there for many more to come!
I plan to come back to watch next season's Niners! ;-)

Old School all the way! I stopped in here to wait for a friend who was flying into SFO (this is only about a mile away from the airport) and I was welcomed like I was a regular!
The bar has been here since the 40's and that is just part of it's charm. Leo, the bartender, was great! He took excellent care of me during my visit, telling me about the area I was in (South San Fran) and a little of the history of the place. And the people who shared the bar with me were funny and engaging!
Know before you go that it is CASH ONLY and that they close EARLY (10pm on the Friday night when I was here) But there are plenty of TV's to catch your favorite game on and their collection of alcohol is vast so they will be able to pour whatever you are drinking!
The drinks are cheap ($5 for a mixed drink) and during the lunch hours the owner springs for some free eats for the patrons (nothing fancy- think pizza). And parking is easy either on the street or there is a municipal pay lot right next door.
The next time you have time to kill waiting for a flight to come in at SFO- skip the cell phone lot. Topper is just as convenient and a heck of a lot more fun!

This place is one of the funniest places I have ever been.
I learned how to play 3 different dice games from the regulars.
very mellow dive bar. one the funniest things was that the bartender was druck as hell. there was this little poodle running around(it was the guy that lived upstairs)

It's like someone forced a drag queen into a 49'ers Jersey, thrust a full bowl of Nachos into their hands, and, at gunpoint, drove them to the stadium, planted them near the 50 yard line with a giant foam finger hot glued to their hand, and demanded: "Cheer good, Blu Rae, cheer real good."
The bar itself, is beautiful. Old school, red velvet walls, black leather, great exterior, period details. But someone has turned it into a sports bar, on top of those original details. In case my analogy earlier fell flat.
The bartender was very nice. Makes a wicked Martini. Was glad to not get beat up for drinking a martini. The patrons were sad, but not the funny kind of sad, the drinks are insanely cheap, and it closes at 10.
