I make my way to flippin' Dutchess of Beauty Bar on FourSquare then Mick goes and buys out the building.
Well, guess I'll just have to become the 'Til Two Dutchess now!
Goodbye, Beauty Bar. You were a pleasant place to sit at whenever any friends wanted to trek out to City Heights.
I think your building is still in good hands, though, with the owner of Tower Bar behind you.

There have been a couple of bands that have played here that I wanted to check out, but a couple of my friends didn't recommend it and said it was trashy. Honestly, for a bar on El Cajon Blvd and Euclid...its not trashy at all.
I finally came to check out "The Silent Comedy," and they were AMAZING! Its a small venue for a band, but still real cool. I was thrown off by the crowd that was smoking, cuz its "technically" outside, but sure seems to be inside.
Drinks were strong. I thought it was cool that they had those sit down, cover your whole head, hair dryers lined up against the wall for peeps to sit down at, (I'm a guy, I don't really know the right name for it)...but it makes sense considering it's the Beauty Bar. It was a bit comical seeing the people that sat down there; just doesn't look right.
The crowd was chill, seemed friendly. Ages ranged from baby 21 year olds to late 40s (I think).
Here are a couple of unexpected "situations" that happened while I was there. First off, I stepped outside to go to the 7-11 across the street, and just before I cross a fight breaks out in front of 7-11. I just haven't seen a fight in a long time. I'm sure it was over a good reason, you know, someone must have forgotten to cover their mouth as they yawned, and offended the other party.
Secondly, while I was outside the bar drinking my water (no outside drinks allowed inside), a "lady of the night" started talking to me. I don't think she was an official "street walker" or "working girl", but I think she was an old druggy who was "hooking" and looking to "prostitute" herself. She actually started talking to me over by the 7-11, and then she reappeared by the bar. She asked me if I had plans for the night, and then she asked me if I was the bouncer at the bar. I started spinning around in circles and humming real loudly until she left.
Re-cap:
- Fair priced drinks
- Not trashy for El Cajon/Euclid
- Great band: The Silent Comedy
- Cool people
- Fight outside 7-11
- Hooker mistook me for the bouncer

The Beauty Bar is pretty much the equivalent of the Peach Pit from 90210. This is where Dylan and Brenda would have their dates and where Brandon would be working with ol' Nat. That is of course if the cast of 90210 were hipsters, which clearly they are not.
Only the coolest of the cool frequent this bar. You have to be on your game coming here as the irony better be cranked to maximum. Most times I have come here, it is like the hipster prom.... skinny leg jeans, PLO scarves, and PBR tall boys as far as the eye can see.
The Beauty Bar is usually pretty well stocked with people and the wait time to get a drink usually sucks. The booze is not too expensive but it comes at a bit of a premium.
It really is a great smokers bar and I'm talking about any type of smoker here; cig smokers, weed smokers, crack smokers, whatever. There is a huge "open" area in the back where you can smoke, and it is open to the rest of the bar with no divider. The place is so damn dark that you could pretty much smoke anything, anywhere you want in the bar.
The bar has all sorts of live music and shows, and to their credit, they book a nice variety of acts which is usually my reason for coming here. The DJs are interesting, and when it is crowded people start dancing, but it never seems really like there is a large group of people dancing... not like downtown at least.
This bar is alright, but there is really no reason to go there unless there is a show that you want to see. The location is kinda the suck as it is not really a fun walk from North Park, and that whole area is crawling with cops looking for drunk drivers.
If you do decide to go, be sure to visit your neighborhood American Apparel store and then go to the Irony store to grab some extra irony.

Cute little bar/club. Great atmosphere. Very rockability. AWESOME music. I need to see a band play here eventually.
The neighborhood is trashy but I also live a few blocks away down the street so what can ya do? 2 guys tried to pick us up at 7-11 across the street at 2 in the morning. We told them that we just wanted chips and one replied, "Well my friend here is a great cook! He can make you chips!" Sleezes.
I didn't realize this place was so popular. They also have one in Vegas and LA.

If you're a scenester, you love this place. But of course, that makes the haters hate even more. I never come here to hang out, I'm all about seeing live bands here. So it's usually my first stop in the night since bands are done relatively early (midnightish?) There's usually a DJ before and after the bands. Much booty shaking to be had, for sure.
Drinks are a bit on the expensive side (I'm used to dive bars, what can I say?) and they do have a couple of bartenders with some 'tude.
Bonus star for being able to smoke on the patio.

I firmly believe that people should be able to dress however they like. As I've mentioned before, it takes more than fashion sense to intimidate me--but not much more than that to entertain me. Take a pair of high-waisted shorts and team them with a leotard and a self-conscious expression, and you've almost made up for the fact that there's virtually no beer selection in this place. Almost.
As I'll only visit Beauty Bar to see a band, I don't mind the cover. I'm not thrilled with the slooooow admission process, but I understand it. The place is set up in such a way that if more than 2-4 people are inside getting cash and paying their cover at the same time, there would be a jam for sure.
The place is packed with what seems to be a pretty young crowd. Their ironic dance moves and fashion statements are presented with self-congratulatory smirks that hint that most of these people weren't acquainted with them their first time around. The mass of writhing bodies in the dance area makes it difficult to move from the patio to the bar, or to reach the tiny (tiny, tiny) restrooms, and the music they pulse to has its moments, but overall sets my teeth on edge.
Decor in the beauty/bar area is definitely true to the theme, but sort of cheaply/half-way done. As if they'd hired someone like me to decorate--someone with a decent eye and ideas, but limited resources when it comes to execution. I haven't personally had any problems with the bartenders, though more than one of my friends have experienced the sliding drink price scale from time to time. My issue is with the bouncers, or a few of the bouncers, who insist on pushing sober people out of the way instead of simply saying "excuse me." Grrr! I HATE that! I'm tempted to take off a star for that alone...
The back patio makes up for some of it though. Yes, in any kind of inclement weather the back patio is a hermetically sealed, smoky, steamy, smelly sauna. But when the weather is fine it's a great place to watch a show. The open air enables one to stand towards the back and enjoy the music without earplugs, and the smoke wafts upwards and away. With enough friends, you can enjoy the music and the San Diego night with only minimal intrusion from the tragically ironic set and their herky-jerky dance moves.

Oh, hell no. This place just about fits the bill for everything I don't like in a bar (minus the fratties- at least this place doesn't have that.)
Super-crowded; rude bartenders; small dance floor where drunk people who can't dance try to anyway, which isn't the problem, except when they take up way too much room, bumping into people and being rude as hell about it; not to mention the stringy hipsters that won't dance with you, but will only stand there next to you, breathing on you and looking at you with beady little eyes which is so f-ing creepy; plus the fact that the 80s are over, hipsters are lame (smile, dance! it can be good for you!), and both those things should be understood by now so get with it, people. YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BE IN COBRASNAKE, MOVE TO LA IF THAT'S WHAT YOU WANT!
the only benefit, kind of, is that there is a large smoking area. only this is where bands usually play, and holy crap, are they bad most times. Saw an LA band back in September that made my ears bleed. Debbie Harry would've cried at the bastardization they were doing to Blondie's music.
Last note (sorry I'm full of hate this morning!): paying cover in San Diego is ridiculous, and something I will never get used to. I never paid cover to go to Beauty Bar in New York (which also sucked, but way less than this place)... so why would I do it here? pssh.

Well, everyone who hated this bar, you got your wish. It's closing. The last night is Sep 26th....
So sad, it was such a pretty little bar.

I like the concept of this place, I really do. A beauty salon turned bar is rather clever. The seats with the hair dryers are amusing and can't help but make you play with it and chuckle. The glittered walls are quite pretty to look at.
I came here for the first time a few weeks ago for a friend's band. I wanted to see The Notice play (they are really good btw!) and the drinks were decent. While I couldn't help by be amused with the ambiance, I wasn't crazy about the neighborhood it was in or that I had to worry sick about whether or not someone was going to break into my car.
The line outside with very interesting people made me feel like I was in high school again where the posers hang out. The crowd had a big range of people, from the slutty looking girls (or at least dressed like one, they could be the groupies) to the stained t-shirt clan.

This place is a step below a dive bar, so if that's your thing, then this is your place.
The coolest thing about this place is how they left in the old school hair dryers as seats for the place. So points for cool decor. Beauty bar showcases local bands, which I think its super cool, and they have lots of cheap drinks and beer like Pbr's and Miller High Life. Other than that, meh. Been there, done that.
